Taking the plunge and signing up to the FLexercise Apprenticeship Scheme, heralds the start of an exciting new adventure for Elaine Simmons. She shares her story with us…
At 57, I didn’t expect to be starting a new career path, let alone one that would have me learning anatomy and exercise principles! But life has a way of nudging us in unexpected directions.
After stepping away from my painting and decorating business for health reasons, I found myself wondering what could come next. I knew I wanted to stay active, both physically and mentally, and I was keen to do something positive with my time and energy.
Luckily, I didn’t have to look far for inspiration. My wife, Charlotte, has been a dedicated FLexercise teacher for nearly 33 years. Over the years, I’ve seen first hand how much joy and wellbeing her classes bring to people. I always admired the sense of community and purpose that comes with her work – so when I heard about the FLexercise apprenticeship scheme, something clicked.
I’ll admit, the thought of ‘going back to school’ at my age was a little daunting, but I didn’t need to worry – this scheme isn’t your typical classroom experience. It’s relaxed, flexible, and brilliantly suited for people like me who might be balancing other commitments or feeling nervous about formal education.
The online theory side of the training was something I could do at my own pace, and, to my surprise, I really enjoyed it! Learning about the body, movement, and the FLexercise approach gave me a real sense of purpose. Heather, our training manager, has been an absolute gem. She’s not just a guide – she’s a walking encyclopaedia of the Bagot Stack Principles and has been incredibly supportive throughout.
The practical side of the learning has been just as rewarding. I’ve been fortunate enough to practise teaching with Charlotte’s class members, who have been so encouraging and welcoming. Their support has helped build my confidence enormously. While I’m not quite ready to lead my own class yet, I know with the guidance of my mentor and a bit more practice, I’ll get there soon.
If you’re considering a change in direction, a new challenge, or even just a fun side hustle, I can’t recommend the FLexercise apprenticeship scheme highly enough. Whether you’re in your twenties or your fifties (like me!), it’s never too late to learn something new, connect with others, and do something that truly benefits your wellbeing – and the wellbeing of others.
So here’s to new beginnings, staying active, and keeping life moving!
